Not to be pedantic, but in your helpful example, you have the green arrow turning out of the entrance to the parking lot, not the exit

Pedentry welcome. That was a mistake on my end though I have actually seen that happen in real life. I have even seen people confused about the five Mile intersection drive over the median!

Beechmont Avenue is a stroad (https://www.streetlightdata.com/what-is-a-stroad/), a coin of phrase created by Strong Town's Chuck Marohn to describe a dangerous kind of transportation corridor that incorporates elements of both streets (destinations) and roads (connecting to destinations - think of a highway).

They're very dangerous and while it may be illegal, I sympathize with the drivers who turn into the middle turn lane trying to navigate a left turn. The alternative is often to turn right and spend even more time trying to find a place to turn around.

One thing I noticed in Vancouver WA (where my son used to live) is that their main stroad used hardscaping to prevent left turns. They also provided frequent hardscaped turn lanes, where you could either turn left or do a U-turn.

I've turned into a complete traffic safety nerd in my older years. While that's not the focus of this Saturday's Neighborhood Summit, I expect to see a number of my fellow advocates there on Saturday. https://www.investinneighborhoods.org/neighborhood-summit/. The neighborhood engagement session looks especially interesting.

I used to work in an office on Ohio Pike (Beechmont Ave but in ClerCo). I saw so many cars that were t-boned in the turn lane I swore that I would never do it again. Now living in CA, I have seen the light: medians on every major street, no left turns from parking lots or side streets, but turn arrows and legal U turns at almost every intersection. I was skeptical when I first got here, but it works beautifully.

Having grown up in Anderson Township and then lived until I was in my early 30s in the Greater Cincinnati area, I was shocked to find out this was only a Cincy thing when I moved to Minnesota.

Beechmont Blitz ®️©️™️ acknowledged. This maneuver elicits my most creative curses when executed in front of me… and eye rolls from mi esposa at my reaction (don’t think I don’t know, sweetheart, I can HEAR them)

As another Commenter mentioned, yes dammit there are places where left turns should be verboten. Many places

Wait, what? Is this some sort of regional restriction? I checked and it's not illegal where I live (Utah) and a local news station recommends it: https://ksltv.com/local-news/safe-in-60-navigating-the-two-way-left-turn-lane/422891/

Sounds like the left turn itself should be illegal.

Some places come up with creative restrictions! Seems too hard to ban.

But if I didn’t turn into the universal turn lane on Broad St in Falls Church, I would still be waiting to turn for the past two hours instead of writing this comment. (Maybe OH and VA laws are different. But I suppose it’s possible that I’m breaking VA law.)

My bet is you could get ticketed. There are places where it is commonly accepted due to bad design or universal adoption of corner cutting. My complaint with this very long 4 lane road is that it happens at any/every intersection. It is nightmarish.
