Tastes of Summer
Plus: A flashbang of a night!
Summer is almost over, and I’d be remiss to not provide some summer updates in the forms of blurbs and images.
The World Cup may be over, but FC Cincinnati soccer is back. We saw a nice win over Vancouver!
White Castle’s garlic cheese is back.
Here’s me in 2006 celebrating its introduction at White Castle in Saint Louis.
As you can see, it is marquee worthy and tastes just as good as I remember (if you like garlic cheese, and you may not.)
We recently visited the Greyhound Tavern in Fort Mitchell, KY and highly recommend it.
I had a steak with chimichurri, fries, their well-regarded mashed potatoes, and of course we had to try the homemade cheese sticks, which are like an inch thick.
The Creamy Whip in Mt. Washington seemingly is busier this season, with a line out the door most nights. The Ganim family (which also dabbles in antiques) has upped their game with new baseball flair.
The Sebastian Coffeehouse is doing great business and has been a constant breakfast stop. If you’ve not yet been, go.
Goettafest was a hit, and unless you’re truly an aficionado (which in my family is only me), it’s good for a brief visit. It’s open again this weekend if you’re interested. I highly recommend the wood fired pizza, either regular Goetta or “Goetta Grip” which involves the Grippo’s flavored variety.
In local news, data centers and flock cameras are all the rage. People are mad and don’t want either. Until election days, we’re gonna see constant political ads and news about both.
But in a similar vein, I find myself using the Citizen app, which utilizes technology marrying police and fire dispatches with citizens with smartphones. In olden days, I’d use my scanner or Broadcastify when I heard a lot of sirens.
Not that I am saying government surveillance is the same, but we’re paying handsomely to stay informed by surveilling ourselves. There used to be something people paid for that did this. What’s it called: local news?
That no local media has covered this is sort of an indictment of the decline of local media and our willingness to pay for it. How does the SWAT team flashbanging a resident to arrest them to save them from themselves not make any local news? Can/should we really trust ourselves to be the narrators?
From what I picked up on the updates from the scanner, a local woman allegedly stabbed somebody known to her. That person, reportedly a man, either escaped or was let go and transported to the hospital.
A standoff ensues. 10 or so cop cars, there for two plus hours. The woman did not want to be taken into custody and shouted from her balcony multiple things consistent with somebody who appeared to be flirting with suicide by cop.
The Cincinnati Police SWAT team ultimately was able to utilize a flash bang as a distraction and successfully arrest her.
I’m calling it The Night at the Roxbury.
